Annai, Guyana: – November 9, 2018 – Thanks to the generosity of the Office Of The First Lady Of Guyana, Exxon Mobile, Iwokarama and STEMGuyana, students from Annai Primary school in region 9 Guyana officially began their STEM club activities. Today’s activities included robot building and programming with robot kits donated by Exxon Mobile. Annai is a small village in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region of Guyana.
Thanks to the commitment and contribution of their amazing teachers MS Odessa Ross and Sir Byran Chintaman for taking the time to make the STEM club activities possible. STEMGuyana intends to make weekly lesson plans available to Annai students and all STEM clubs in the nationwide program. Lesson plans will include project and group based learning about Science, Engineering and Technology concepts like Levers, Pulleys, the brain of the robot, how remote control systems work, the history of robots, how robots are powered, IR sensors, the principle of light, the transformation of energy and many other topics related topics.
Students will also learn how to code using Scratch programming and will strengthen their Maths fundamentals skills. “These activities are designed for 21st century learning”, said STEMGuyana co-founder, Karen Abrams. “Our goals is to build and strengthen the technical skills of all of our club members, while also strengthening their soft skills like collaboration, cooperation, communication, problems solving and critical thinking.”
In 2019, all teams in the International Youth Robotics League will compete in the national qualifiers competition to determine which students will represent Guyana in the November 2019, IYRL competition, scheduled for Thailand.
